2019 Chevrolet Tahoe essentials: The modern suburban status symbol

Our Opinion: The Chevy Tahoe and its ilk have become the big premium “car” that signifies suburban success in America. If you have a couple kids and a healthy skepticism regarding climate science, chances are you own a full-size utility or are interested in owning one. Do you need one? Probably not, but rationalization is a powerful tool for obscuring wants as essentials, and since you thought about buying a boat that one time, you should probably get something that can tow it …Thing is, the Tahoe is sort of the personal luxury coupe of the modern era — big but not particularly spacious. Yes, it has three rows of seats, but if you actually use those three rows on a regular basis there’s not much room for anything else. The cargo compartment with the third row up is laughably small, and the load floor starts at about 4 feet off the ground, making it hard to use too. Chevy seems to understand though, and the Tahoe is equipped kind of like the aforementioned luxury coupe; there’s no brocade cloth, but a broad, comfortable driver’s seat, commanding view across an acre of hood and power EVERYTHING gives away the fact that most Tahoes are occupied by exactly one person on any given trip. To its credit, Chevrolet makes sure that person feels like the king of the road.  If it seems like I’m knocking Chevy’s big utility, I’m not — these things are comfortable, powerful and beautifully trimmed, they can tow 8,000-plus pounds and make noises like a Camaro roaring away from a stoplight. I’m actually advocating for the larger Suburban for drivers who need something like this: It offers real cargo space for big families on long trips with very little fuel economy or price penalty over a smaller Tahoe.–Andrew Stoy, digital editorOptions: Premier Plus edition with 6.2-liter V8, 10-speed automatic, 22-inch wheels, running boards, rear axle 3.23 ratio, trailer brake controller, high-capacity air cleaner, 170-amp generator, active noise cancellation, two-speed transfer case; sun, entertainment, destination package with cargo area organizer, driver information center, head-up display, roof rack, chrome exhaust tips ($12,670); iridescent pearl coat ($995); sun, entertainment discount (minus-$500)
